KNM exam for family migrants

The KNM is the part of the inburgering exam about Dutch society. This page explains it in plain English. You can also try the free topics.

Under the Wet inburgering 2021, family members of EU, EEA or Swiss citizens do not have an inburgering duty.

What is the KNM exam?

KNM stands for Kennis van de Nederlandse Maatschappij. In English that is knowledge of Dutch society.

It is one part of the inburgering exam, the Dutch civic integration exam. You answer multiple-choice questions on a computer. The questions are grouped by theme.

As far as we can tell from the law, the Wet inburgering 2021 has one KNM exam for all routes.

How long is the KNM exam?

We have not found the number of questions or the pass mark on an official page (checked 2 November 2026). Others report those two numbers below.

  • The exam lasts 45 minutes.
  • It has 40 questions.
  • You need 28 correct answers to pass.
  • You get the result by letter within 8 weeks. You can also see it in Mijn Inburgering.

What is on the KNM exam?

Dutch law lists eight subjects for the KNM exam:

  • Work and income (werk en inkomen)
  • Manners, values and norms (omgangsvormen, waarden en normen)
  • Housing (wonen)
  • Health and health care (gezondheid en gezondheidszorg)
  • History and geography (geschiedenis en geografie)
  • Government bodies (instanties)
  • How the state and the rule of law work (staatsinrichting en rechtsstaat)
  • Education and upbringing (onderwijs en opvoeding)

HeloMate groups the same material into 13 topics of its own. That split is ours. It is not an official number.

Which law applies to me?

There are KNM exams for the Wet inburgering 2013 and for the Wet inburgering 2021. Which one applies depends on the date your inburgering duty started. If you do not know, look in Mijn Inburgering.

What does the KNM exam cost?

The fee page on inburgeren.nl lists EUR 50 for the KNM exam under the Wet inburgering 2021. We could not confirm the price under the Wet inburgering 2013. Check the fee page for your own case.
